Dancing with the Stars Injuries

Believe it or not, dancing can be a strenuous sport, and Dancing with the Stars, has had its share of injuries. Illness and injuries during the show, whether from dancing or not, has affected professionals and celebrities alike. But in most cases, it did not affect the final outcome or the season finale of the show.

Many times injuries affected the performance of the players, and often resulted in elimination. The first injury that actually occurred during a show, affected professional dancer Kim Johnson. After hyper extending one of her legs, she and her partner, Jerry Springer, struggled through the rest of the season, but were eventually were eliminated.

Season five was rather fraught with injuries and illness. The first occurred when Marie Osmond was actually performing and for unknown reasons, fainted in the middle of her performance. This necessitated a quick commercial break, and medical attention. Also during season five, Mark Ballas another professional, injured his shoulder during an encore dance with Sabrina Bryan. Since they had already been eliminated, it didn't have any affect on their competition. So although there were injuries and illness during season five, none of them actually affected the show itself or the competition.

Season six, had a bit of illness and injury, when Jane Seymour wound up with food poisoning. Fortunately it was only during a result show, so she was not just penalized for missing the show or competition. Also, Kristi Yamaguchi, injured her ankle during the show, and was tough enough to continue on and actually win season six. Cristian de la Fuente suffered an injury during the show, a ruptured tendon, involving his left bicep and it happened actually during his competition performance. The judges were able to understand the injury and so only judged his performance up until the point where his tendon ruptured, and of course, as soon as he was done, to the hospital he went.

Other problems that have occurred during the show such as Sara Evans, who withdrew because of divorce, as well as several illnesses, injuries, and problems but those don't usually affect the show itself and have allowed the show to go on.

You wouldn't think that dancing would be very injury ridden, but when competitors are trying their best, and pushing the limits, injuries can happen quickly. Most of the time with Dancing with the Stars, the injuries did not affect the actual competition. The show itself tries to avoid any circumstance of injury by informing contestants and professionals alike of sports medicine and stretches. Even with knowledge, competition is tough, and when those who are in the competition are pushing the limits, even Dancing with the Stars competitors and professionals can have injuries.
